When families hear about ABA, two words often raise questions or concerns: punishment and rewards. Some people think ABA is about “rewarding a child so they obey” or “punishing them when they misbehave.” However, this idea is incomplete and can lead to confusion.
Consistency is one of the most important elements for helping a child learn new skills, reduce behaviors that interfere with development, and use what they have learned across different settings.
ABA does not end when the session ends. Many of the skills a child learns need to be practiced in everyday life: at home, at school, in the community, and during family routines. For this reason, parents are not passive observers. They are essential partners in the therapeutic process.
